Grand Master Young H. Kwon

Moo Sa Martial Arts & Kids Karate

Here is a brief bio of Grand Master Y.H. Kwon. He was born and raised in Korea. He began his long and distinguished career in the martial arts at a very young age. At the age of nine, Grand Master Kwon received his first degree black belt in the Korean Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan system. He trained at a time when there were no children’s classes, but only adults. Grand Master Kwon was the youngest student to receive a black belt at that time.In 1972, after successfully training both as a student and an instructor, he came to the United States of America with his family. After many years of research, hard work, and refinement, he has developed a commendable, steady combination of traditional training and modern concepts that can benefit everyone.Today, Grand Master Kwon is responsible for the training and promotion of several thousand black belts throughout the United States and Mexico and has become one of the most renowned, well-known masters in this country He is a true teacher, leader, innovator and humanitarian.

Taekkyeon and its connection with Tae Kwon Do

Moo Sa Martial Arts & Kids Karate

We teach Tae Kwon Do and Tang Soo Do here at the moo sa black belt academy. I really think the name Tae Kwon Do really explains more of what we do. Originally Tang Soo Do was the populat name given to Korean martial arts. However Tang comes from the Tang Dynasty in China, soo means hand but implies punch kick or strike, and do means the way. So Tang Soo Do means the way of tangs hand. But it does not mention kicking which korean martial arts are known for. So this is why a Korean General, General Choi, was given the task of coming up with a new name to try and unify all Korean martial arts. He used a old korean martial arts called Taekkyeon, which is manly kicks, to create the name tae kwon do. Tae came from Taekkyeon, which means foot, kwon means fist, and do means the way. So tae kwon do means the way of kicking and punching. There is much more to it then that, but this is a start for right now. Taekkyeon can be seen in mural paintings back in the 3 kingdoms era of korea. It has been around for a long time. It was almost lost. There was only 1 person left in korea that was trained in this martial art. His name was Song Duk Ki. He was sought out by a man who whished to learn it and becuase of this Taekkyeon began to spread again. I have a link to a youtube video below so you can see some Taekkyeon training in korea. ENJOY :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ga1Im-3ZtH8

Self discipline

Moo Sa Martial Arts & Kids Karate

We have been talking about self discipline in our classes. We have been talking about helping mom and dad at home. Everytime I ask my students if they like to help mom and dad at home they say yes. Kids love to help mom and dad. So I have been tring to help the students remember some things they can do on their own that will make mom and dads job easier at home. This is a good lesson and it really helps the kids to take the lesson home.
